QERA Point Score

How the QERA Point Score is calculated

In addition to the AERA point score, QERA also runs its own state point score which is open to all riders and horses that compete in Qld events (including dual affiliated rides) in a given year.

Awards are given for:-
  • QERA Points Horse
  • QERA Points Rider
  • QERA Distance Horse
  • QERA Distance Rider
  • 100% Completion Awards
Rides in SE Qld & Northern Rivers often have upward of 50 riders in some divisions whereas in Northern, Western & Central zones, numbers are generally far smaller. The QERA pointscore seeks to level the playing field as much as possible by placing a greater emphasis on the number of competitors in a particular division at a particular event. Variables including terrain, weather conditions and riding time are not considered in these calculations.

National Point Score system: (Rule 21 of the AERA Rulebook)

All Novice and endurance horses, as well as novice and endurance riders are entitled to national points for successfully
completing affiliated endurance and marathon rides.

Points are allocated as follows:

a) Completion points – the first six places in each riding section receive from 6 down to 1 point. All other finishers get 1 point.
For rides of 160 kilometres or more, completion points are increased b 50% (i.e.: first place in a 160km ride receives 9 points).
b) For equal placing – finishing points are split when riders in the same riding section cross the finish line holding hands, for
example:
• Equal first – add 6 + 5 points, divide by 2 (i.e., 5.5 points each);
• Equal second – add 4 + 3 points, divide by 2 (i.e.; 3.5 points each)
c) Additional distance points – all riders are eligible for one additional distance point for every 10 kilometres in excess of 80
kilometres – that is;
• For 90 kilometre add 1 point;
• For 100 kilometres add 2, etc.
d) Additional riding section points – only the first six riders in each riding section get these additional points;
• If 10 or more riders in riding section, add 1 point;
• If 20 riders or more in riding section, add 2 points;
• If 30 riders or more in riding section, add 3 points etc.
e) A separate register is to be kept for Harness Events. See Harness guidelines.

Additional Points

Additional points are allocated as follows:
• 100 to 119 kilometres, add 0.5 points
• 120 to 159 kilometres add 1 point
• 160 to 319 kilometres add 2.5 points
• 320 to 399 kilometres add 7.5 points
• 400+ kilometres add 10 points
• Double points for Qld State Championships

Consider the following scenario for an 80km ride.

Horse/rider combination 1: 1st place in division with 2 riders in the division;

AERA points 6
QERA points 2

Horse/rider combination 2: 1st place in division with

50 riders in the division;

AERA points 11
QERA points 12

Both AERA & QERA point scores make allowance for place and number of riders in each division but scores are weighted differently. Neither can be considered ‘better’, they are just different.
